Christopher Nolan's best films are all pre-Batman imo (Insomnia, Momento) but because he made what many consider to be the best Batman film in The Dark Knight, he pretty much can do no wrong with his fans. Add to that making "intellectual films" that make money and he represents the ideal director for Hollywood.
Yeah, Oppenheimer just really hit with the Academy because I don't think Emily Blunt should have been nominated either but Supporting was weaker. I think there were other Supporting actors that could have been nominated in place of RDJ but I will just pretend that this is penance for not awarding him for Tropic Thunder.
